Our History
Providence Corners is located on former Cherokee land. After the Cherokees were forced west the land was given away in 1832 in the Georgia Gold Lottery. Jackson Delk was listed as the land owner in tax records until at least 1864. Jackson’s sister, Emily Delk, married William Tritt and the land was in the Delk, Tritt, and Lassiter families until it passed to Norris Tritt in 1948.
Another side piece of history is in June of 1864 McPherson’s Army of the Tennessee passed within a hundred yards of our location moving from Marietta to Roswell in the east to take a strategic location in the Battle of Atlanta.
Cotton States Properties was building other subdivisions in the area and became the developer for what was now to be known as Providence Corners; named in deference to the adjacent New Providence Baptist Church and Providence Road. The church has it’s own unique history; it held it’s “first service in August 1868, in a tavern situated on a small stream that crossed Providence Road a few hundred feet to the east of today’s present church. Ironically, the tavern that had previously offered the “devil’s brew” -6 days per week- became God’s house.”
The subdivision was built in two units. Unit 1 was approved in late 1977 by the County. Unit 2 in mid 1978. Ninety homes were to be built. The recreation area plans were set in 1981.
The homes built were all two-story in a colonial style; four bedrooms, 2.5 baths in varied configurations and exterior appearance. The lots are generous 1/3 acres plus. A large swimming pool, twin tennis courts, a playground, and play field were amenities offered with HOA membership. Providence Corners also features a single entrance to insure safe and quiet streets, sidewalks, and underground utilities.
In 1981 as the last homes were being finished Providence Corners Homeowners Association was incorporated. The Covenants and Bylaws, first recorded in 1980 and renewed for the twenty year anniversary. In 2018 the Covenants and Bylaws received major updates and improvements and brought into compliance with current Georgia laws. The revisions eliminated the requirement for periodic twenty year renewal. For current Covenants and Bylaws see the HOA Info page.
In 2016 a capital fund raising drive was started for major maintenance and renovation projects. Approximately $500,000 was raised by the HOA membership over a three year period.
In the spring of 2019 the projects began. The first was the rebuilding of the pond spillway dam.
After a long engineering and permit process the stream adjacent to the recreation areas was rebuilt to prevent erosion and provide a new and welcoming entrance to the pool area. The new entrance integrates the play field with the other recreation areas for an overall enhancement of the neighborhood.
The pool area was rebuilt in 2020-2021 offseason. The pool deck was completely replaced, the pool re-plastered, the bath house redesigned and rebuilt, major maintenance on the underground systems, new fencing and landscaping, and new electronic gate controls installed.
In the spring of 2022 a new covered pavilion for social functions debuted replacing the old pergolas. This communal area will serve both the tennis court and pool areas and be available for year round use. Improved accessibility to the areas will also be included.
